This Week: Paul Masvidal (Cynic) Interview on Into the Void, Opeth, Oriental Metal

28 10 2008

This Thursday, October 30th, my WMBC metal brother Hasan Ali will be interviewing Paul Masvidal of Cynic on Into the Void.  The legendary progressive death metal jazz fusion group recently released a new album, Traced in Air, which is their first release in 15 years!  It should be a very interesting interview.

In other news, I saw Opeth last night and it was awesome!

Finally, the Oriental Metal episode went well.  The playlist is now posted.  The surprise/secret/amusing artist was Dokaka, who did covers of Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath only using his mouth.

As usual the hollow promises about posting previous recordings and upcoming interviews still stand.

Next Week: Oriental Metal, Last Week: Misery Index Interview, Interview Hosting, Harddrive Crash, Poll

21 10 2008

Next week on October 27, 2008, Death by Metal will have the theme of Oriental Metal; metal from our metal brothers on the other side of the globe. I have enough metal to cover at least an hour and I might be able to pull off an entirely Oriental Ethereal Transcendence as well. There will be a surprise artist which most will find amusing, so tune in to find out who it is!

Last week on I Told You I Was Hardcore, Mark Max interviewed Annapolis deathgrinders Misery Index in the studio.  I represented the WMBC metal council with my fellow metal DJs in greeting the two guitarists and awkwardly standing in the studio while he interviewed the band.  There was much badinage and metal to be had, and most impressively the show managed to get over 50 listeners!!!  There may be a technical limitation on the number of computer who can listen to the stream at a time, and there also listeners on the lo-fi stream, so there would probably be even more without the technical limitations.  This is mostly due to the fact that the band advertised the interview on their myspace page.  I have certainly noted this for use in my own future interviews!  Additionally, the band has become quite popular in recent years, as their most recent album, Traitors, has made it in the top 20 of some metal sales chart in it’s first week of release, beating out releases from Dragonforce, Megadeth among others.

Congratulations to the show and the band!

All of the interviews except the Yamatu interview are hosted on Google Video at the moment, but that will change soon.  Firstly, I will edit and upload the Yamatu interview.  Second, I am looking into alternate hosting options for the interviews as a whole.  Having the unnecessary video component is a bit annoying, and none of the videos seem to be getting many hits.  Right now the plan is to host the entire interview on an audio only format host (now that I know of some), and perhaps upload the dialogue only on YouTube.  This latter strategy will allow for a more succinct format that YouTube is suited for, and it will also allow for the interview to spread virally.  Hopefully this will increase listenership.

Many months ago my harddrive crashed.  Fortunately my mp3s survived, but all of the playlist information not already on the site is gone.  Additionally, the Dan Toal and Doug Wiseman II interview is proably lost forever as well.  Pretty much the entirety of last spring’s DbM has been annihilated into the abyss, in metal terms.  In actuality, all of the interviews are gone, but fortunately most of them are uploaded into Google Video.

Finally, I am going to try out WordPress’ new poll feature to find out what DbM listeners consider…the most true form of metal:

Misery Index to Be Interviewed Today (October 8, 2008) at 6:00 PM EST on WMBC/I Told You I Was Hardcore

8 10 2008

There are a number of new metal radio shows on WMBC this semester. One of them which caters to the hardcore crowd, I Told You I Was Hardcore, is doing an in studio interview with Annapolis deathgrinders Misery Index. This is perhaps the most famous band to step in the WMBC studio yet, especially for metal. Yours truly, Death by Metal host Ed Schaefer will be stopping by the studio at 6:00 PM EST to ask a few questions of my own. This is definitely something you want to tune into.
